So, I do all the office support for a shop that does aftermarket leather interior, sunroofs, and electronics. Well, sometimes people make mistakes. We had two identical Civics in the shop — one to get just seat heaters and the other to get a sunroof. There's now an 18"x24" hole in the roof of the seat heater car.

So what's the biggest mistake that you've seen in your shops, oppo?

haha someone is getting a free sunroof. I saw someone light a bucket of gasoline on fire under a BMW 750iL with a spark. Not really a mistake as much as dumbassery though

Yup. It makes my "Forgot to schedule a client's installation," not such a big deal.

i was asked to finish installing side steps on a ford super duty. The guy had already started drilling through the frame for one of the mounting brackets. He didn't check to see what was on the back side of the frame. Thinking if he was drilling there then it was all clear so i didn't check either. Well turns out that is where the fuel line was running. Stainless steel, diesel. All of a sudden fuel was pouring out all over the place.

fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu.... God, I would not want to be the one who has to make that phone call. "hello sir, about your Civic. sidenote, somewhat related, did you realize that studies have shown that sunroofs increase the retail value of a vehicle?"

Used to work at a Saab dealer in my younger days. Was sent out to the lot to bring a client's "Black old 900" out front and was given a key, ended up unlocking and starting the wrong car (some beat up '85 900 instead of the '91 900T Convertible) and bringing it up front to the customer. That was cute.

that is because those ignition cylinders all got so much crap down them the tumblers stuck in the release spot and you could start them with a screwdriver. I had a black 85 900 turbo and my girlfriend at the time had an 89 16V S 900 and our keys worked in each others cars!

I used to be a shop monkey part-time as well as clerk at a Sunoco (nee Mobil). Once the full-time shop monkey rotated tires on a Ram 1500 and unknowingly cocked the front passenger wheel askew and bolted it up. The Ram got on the highway and the wheel came off, grinding the disc and backing plate down flat until it hit the hub. Needless to say the shop took care of the replacement costs.

If the customer in question lacks mechanical aptitude, just tell them a sunroof had to be installed to drop in the seat heaters, otherwise they would not fit.

I still trying to figure out how exactly I would react. I hate sunroofs with a passion I don't really know why but I just do.

If this happend to me I would lose my fucking mind and try to make the shop buy the car from me. That's if I don't get thrown in jail first for attacking the idiot who cut the hole in the roof without making sure he has the right car.

To me if you have 2 of the exact same car it might be wise to check the license plate number before cutting anything.

Wow, that will be some phone call but I figured it out for you!

"Hello sir, this is Steve from the customization shop. We are running a promotion that I forgot to inform you of. Order seat warmers and get a sunroof free! Now we already started this so you need not to worry. Have a great day."

Or just switch the cars, its a Civic, no one will know the difference!

That sounds a lot like what happened to a friends white ram 1500 in edmonton, I assume it must be a somewhat common problem?

It could be on trucks - the Rams had 20" wheels and big tires, so they are bulky and awkward to handle as opposed to most passenger car tires/wheels.

My coworker likes to go away for the weekend and get completely shitfaced. Then he calls in Monday morning saying he overslept and is having car trouble. You know, code speak for hangover.

He had a few appointments with clients today that all had to be rescheduled.

And yet my boss doesn't fire him! Blasphemy.

Yeah, I'm not a fan of sunroofs either. I wonder if a body shop could weld the roof back together?

And I'm the exact opposite. I LOVE sunroofs and would be estatic if that happened to me. Seriously like cloud nine. Sunroofs are one of the best features on a car imo.

There is a sunroof on my car now and I haven't opened it once since I got the car.

don't even talk to me about convertibles oh the horror! I like my privacy so I drive windows up, A/C cranked. who needs fresh air when you can have artificially chilled air instead?

Oh god you just killed me inside! To each their own. But to me Convertibles are the best. Ever. I'm so pissed I don't have one now. But I will soon. I want to always have a convertible. I love the open air feeling!!! Its just like how I use the sunroof every day and night possible.

Its amazing how different everyone feels towards them.

Depends on the car. My Z had a sunroof when I bought it. I hate aftermarket sunroofs in my cars. Other people? Whatever floats your boat. Anyway, I bought mine knowing I'd have to address the sunroof a PO had installed. The roof of the S30 is a single sheet of steel, and the thin foam+vinyl headliner glues directly to it (that's exciting to install...). You can't weld in a panel well enough to make the compound and varying curvature of the roof look right in paint, and you can't bolster and support the filler to sand the curvature to perfection without having a bumpy headliner underneath. We drilled out the spot welds to remove the original roof from the underlying A-to-C pillar/hatch structure, and replaced it with an un-sunroofed panel we cut off of a parts yard Z, welding it back in on the spot welds and joints the way it was built at the factory. PITA, but came out nicely. A car with a tent/ribs headliner structure might give you more space to engineer a weld-in patch.
